SiliconDream reports that the Myth Story chat went relatively well, with occasional disturbances by a few unruly members. Next time we may have another chat-nanny or two on hand to reduce distractions. David Bricker and Rolf have both provided copies of the chat, granting viewers a choice between plain text and HTML. Thanks guys! And thanks to all who participated, either as teachers or students.
Some of you may not yet have been exposed to OniRes, a site devoted to hacking into Oni. (It's just amazing to see this sort of thing in full-swing weeks before the game even hits store shelves) Acrappa began OniRes only a short while ago, and then it was quickly snapped up by OBO for hosting.
One of the most important features at OniRes is is the downloadable OniTools package. If you have any desire to create an Oni mod at some time in the future, or just to root around and see how Bungie did things, then this is the place to get on the boat.
We earlier noted that the GoD Games official Oni site, somewhat ripped from the Bungie site, had a number of glaring errors. Those have for the most part been corrected, we note. No references to multiplayer, blood in-game or the Iron Demon mecha. (Damn on the last one!) The special moves feature continues to count down to Oni hitting the shelves. It's a fun and informative resource for those of us who haven't had a chance to play yet.
Voodoo Extreme is reporting that EB World has stopped taking Halo preorders because... get this... it has been cancelled for the PC and Mac? Merkinjata was the first to inform us about Voodoo Extreme's news item:
According to The Gimpster EBWorld will no longer be accepting pre-orders for the PC version of Halo, as they were informed by the higher-ups that Halo would be an Xbox exclusive title and to cease accepting pre-orders for the game. Considering EBWorld will take pre-orders for literally anything, this could be some pretty strong news that Microsoft plans to keep Halo off the PC... But - I just asked the official PR rep who handles Halo and he says as far as he knows the PC and Mac versions are still on, and will know more next week.
First of all... Don't Panic! Sure enough, I've gone to EB World's site and Halo is no longer listed for preorder. But this isn't true of any other site where I've noticed Halo for preorder before. A little over two years ago, there was a huge issue with EB World suddenly refusing Mac users' Myth II preorders, and apparently even cancelling previous such preorders, because they claimed it would be coming out for PC only. After some time and some squashed toes the matter was eventually cleared up. Strike one.
As the above quote from Voodoo Extreme reports, Microsoft's PR Department so far denies that there is any truth to the rumor. Strike two.
Rampancy.net (and I'm sure several other sites and private citizens by now ;-) has fired off an e-mail to Bungie, asking for clarification. We should stress that nothing like this can be considered to be more than rumor until Bungie gives the straight tru7h. Hopefully Bungie, itself, will make a statement on the matter soon™.
Kudos to derf, who pointed out an interesting article on violence that, among other things, actually cites Marathon 2 as a potential source of violent responses from college students. Must be all those BOB incidents... the relevant excerpt:
In another study cited by the authors, college students who played the violent video game Marathon 2 generated 43% more aggressive responses in later tests than those who played a nonviolent game.
Two things need to be pointed out here. First, Marathon is a computer game, not a video game. These people obviously didn't research! Scandalous! Second, 43%? 4 + 3 = ...

I picked up the February Issue of Maxim's Stuff magazine today, andsurely enough I found Oni in the review's section. Not a glowing review, but good. Worth picking up.
If anyone manages to get a copy of that, please toss up a couple of quotes in our community forum.

There's always got to be a critic, and Oni is no exception. Oni has received some great reviews, but GameSlice takes a few whacks at the apparent lack of an ability to customize Oni's interface. Some might question posting a bad review up, but methinks one always has to take the bad (ugly?) with the good. Take a look at the article.
As posted on Thursday, SiliconDream and David Bricker (and now a few other Aslylumites) will be holding a teach-in at RHL tonight at 6pm Pacific/9pm Eastern. Sili posted his announcement here and I posted a crash introduction to hotline and RHL here, in case anybody is wondering how to attend. If you don't have an RHL account yet, you'd better hurry and request one now because they likely won't be handed out during that period. (We'll be more interested in teaching or participating)
Santa's Head just recently dropped a bit of a zinger on our forum in response to some comments about Iron-enabled Trow in Myth III: The Wolf Age. A lot of people have openly expressed concern about the possibility for one of the most powerful units in Myth becoming even more powerful. This is what SH had to say:
We talked with Scott (project head) about this yesterday.. I must say that his answer awed me. (can't tell ya details) There may be a small balance issue or two to work out, but I can guarantee that a Myrk Giant mistake WILL NOT be made. In fact, today Meggs was asking if they should be in the multi-player game at all, and I voted _for_ it. Hey, I dig variety, and a single map with wild units on it can be a good thing. Think of the balance in the Myth one map For Carnage Apply Within. Trow are at the mercy of soulless and act as a different kind of melee unit. This kind of special unit can make for very fun gaming. Myrk Giants are wildly umbalanced for a variety of reasons.. the most prominent being: never give the fastest unit a projectile weapon , he'll last forever in a very lame way.I know everyone is worried about the Team 'ruining' their favorite game. I was myself until I got here.
Trust me.. this is going to live up to your expectations. We have a few add-ons that are NOT being thrown in to make sure the game is out on time, and most importantly, is a balanced, FUN game.
Also.. Scott just told me the BIG secret... (literally, ten seconds ago) 'who IS the Head'(from Myth I, not me)... *8)
