The crew at Halo Center report that the Editor-in-Chief of Incite PC responded to their inquiry about new Halo footage:
Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you about this. I'm glad you and other Halo fans enjoyed our video of the game. We are planning to do another video update as soon as Bungie will let us get in there to do it. We're also excited about this game, so we can't wait to go back.
Heh... who wouldn't be excited about a chance to spend some time with Bungie? A good job goes out to R@ge, Flashback and Recoil.
The UK Halo site, Total Halo, continues day two of a five-question interview they did with Wirehead and Louis of BOrg, Ferrex, myself and themselves. Hrm... I'm noting that my answers are a bit longer than the others so far. Hopefully you won't drown in the verbiage. =)
Noticed at HBO was another, more convincing post which continues the recent string of Halo beta hoaxes. This one claimed that Bungie was releasing code to a mailing list to show off the Halo engine's features. For prudence, we tossed an E-mail to Matt. He gave due consideration to the matter and prepared an eloquent response:
My ass.-Matt
There you have it, straight from Bungie's mouth. Matt's ass is the only place where you can obtain a Halo beta right now.
Really, though: when you see something like this it's a good idea to pause and consider the facts. Halo is barely in the second of three stages of development, and I highly doubt that they would want to distribute their code to the public at this point. Giving the competition an opportunity to dissect and reverse-engineer Bungie's magic before Halo is even close to a release date would not be an intelligent strategy. Bungie barely supplied us with the Marathon 2 source code a few months ago! Here's one, sure-fire method for knowing the truth about this and a number of other equally important matters: Bungie will tell us, themselves.
We've got a small treat for you this morning. CyberBob of Haloworld scanned in an image from the current GameStar issue and passed me a copy to show to the fans on this side of the pond. It shows a Human with his Gatling gun crouching next to a Covie armed with an energy blade. That gun is lookin' mighty sexy. (Purr-fect for home dee-fense!)
On Sunday I reported about a clipping from PC Gamer's May issue. PCG made some statements about the delays that Oni has experienced while in development. After a bit of discussion by the fans, Matt Soell had something to say in our forum. Here's a short blurb from that post:
Bungie has been growing steadily, and has doubled in size most years. We couldn't do that if selling games was problematic for us. :-)
Matt's full statement is worth reading. It just goes to show, again, that one can't believe everything that one reads.
R@ge of Halo Center asked for us to let you know about a new skin review site they're hosting called Skin Surge. He also passed on that Recoil, Skin Surge's admin, is looking for people to do reviews and to help code the site.
The webmasters you thought you knew. fAt1 of Total Halo sends word that the first in a series of interview specials has been posted, asking a number of webmasters from this little community of ours to sum up Halo in one sentence. Over the next few days, more questions will be posted, and it should be interesting to see what the answers were.
Believe nothing that you read. Cutting short our investigation the recent leaked Beta rumors, Bungie's Matt Soell offered this response to one of our emails:
>A few Hotline folk at claiming there is a Halo beta-demo in
>circulation in that wonderful, wide warez network of theirs.Totally bogus. You can tell by the d1r2 bit; we don't number them like that.
-Matt
We had wondered if the alleged size of the beta was correct, but Matt was too wiley for us, and didn't reveal that bit of information. Dang. Our thanks to him for clearing this up a bit, and for those of you who downloaded all those halobeta.img.sit files that were popping up on HL servers, better luck next time. Or not...
The May 2000 issue of PC Gamer has a feature titled Where Are They Now? Dammit! and includes Oni in its listing of over a dozen highly anticipated games which have gone past their projected release dates. However, the thing which caught this reporter's eye was a paragraph that left me feeling a bit quizzical.
WHY WE'RE INTERESTED:
Konoko is the truly badass Lara Croft. The blend of gunplay and hand-to-hand fighting worked surprisingly well in the version that we played some time ago. And Bungie has always managed to produce entertaining (if commercially problematic) titles.
Now what did they mean by that? I'm not going to attempt to cram any guesses into this post, but it would probably be worthy of some discussion within our forum. I captured an image of the full clipping, if you would like to see what else they said.
