  2. Nintendo To Drop Out Of Hardware Business?

Sat, 09/14/2002 - 04:33 by narcogen

There's a rumor running at Xbox365 that interprets some recent trends as meaning that Nintendo intends to pull a Sega and go software-only soon. Consider the source, but give it a look anyway.

not too likely

Thats a pretty lame story. Its like something you would see in a magazine at your local check-out counter in the grocery store. None of those reasons were legit in concluding that Nintendo is pulling out of the hardware business. It would be nice if they would though. Oh, here we go... i got a new story for you: "Xbox sales are down! Microsoft is not yet profiting from the system! Microsoft is going bankrupt! Bill Gates will be homeless!" Not too likely, you say?

Some people didn't think it likely that:

1) Sega would exit the hardware market.
2) Microsoft would make a game console
3) Bungie would sell to Microsoft

In short, people's gut reactions rarely make good indicators unless they have good information.

While this story IS just a rumor, there is also some good reasoning behind it. A company with good third party developer support rarely (no pun intended) relinquishes influence over that support unless they no longer need it. The only situation in which Nintendo would no longer need 3rd party developer support would be if they were to become a software developer themselves and get out of hardware.

I'm not saying it's a slam dunk. But I'm just saying it is consistent.

Bah. If anything, they seem more likely to get out of the software business -- which directly coincides with more actions than the story quotes.

First off, the franchises that they've held. This may at first seem silly, but the Zelda series is going through Capcom (I expect Link in Mar vs Cap 3), the Tetris "series" is moving through other systems, and now Rare is being sold. Then they have a contender (of sorts) for the hardware market, and a "symbolic" monopoly over the handholds -- the next smallest piece of hardware is the PSone with a screen attached. Nintendo also holds a reputation for putting out somewhat user [kid]-friendly games, ranging from Mario (which they still have) to the early FF games. Only recently have they really added much bloodnguts, starting with the 64 (Goldeneye, PD, Nukem, Quake), and the quanity hasn't gotten much greater. They're advertising Mickey Mouse games, for crying out loud.

While Nintendo has been outmaneuvered in the console battle, that doesn't mean that the company's gunna go belly-up. They just need to consider their business strategy for the next couple of years.
