  2. Halo 2 Is Moore Than Just A Video Game

Thu, 08/19/2004 - 07:38 by narcogen

Microsoft's VP for Xbox marketing has been interviewed over at GameSpot, and, predictably, the subject of Halo 2 comes up. Here's what Pete Moore had to say:

When I look at the numbers right now on a global scale and, in particular, in North America, there is no doubt in my mind that the first 24 hours of Halo 2 will be bigger than the first 24 hours of any movie at box office or music CD. They will pale in comparison. Halo 2 will be the biggest 24 hours in entertainment retail history. This is bigger than video games. It’s a pop culture phenomenon. The anticipation for the November 9 launch is huge. Our retail partners will have thousands of stores open at midnight, with hundreds of thousands of copies snatched up right there.

Of course, then he says "I think we did a terrific job launching the Dreamcast" so keep a salt shaker handy while you read.

In what sense? I google "dreamcast launch" and of the first four hits, three are the following items:

"dreamcast launch marred by glitches"
"dreamcast launch not all fun and games"
"delays and shortages dampen Dreamcast launch"

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=dreamcast%20launch

I realize the DC has its fans, but this system's lack of success is why Sega doesn't make hardware anymore.

That would be funny if....

Peter Moore was the one who helmed the Dreamcast launch. I guess Bernie Stolar is easy to forget.

It's Moore's quote, not mine. If Moore is claiming to have done something he hasn't, that's another issue. But the interview contains that quote-- "I think we did a terrific job launching the Dreamcast."

This says two things to me: he is insinuating he had a hand in the DC's launch, and by putting a positive spin on something that seems to have primarily gotten negative press, he's created a situation that calls his judgment into question.

YMMV.
