  2. Xbox Gateway Available For Download

Fri, 11/23/2001 - 02:17 by narcogen

Ferrex pointed out at RHL that there is now a site purporting to have an Xbox Gateway program available for download.

It's a Linux boot disk set that sets up an ethernet bridge-like system that can be used to connect Xbox consoles remotely over the Internet for playing so-called System Link games that can be played on LAN.

From their FAQ:

Q: What games are currently working?
A: So far, we have only tested HALO in System Link mode over the Internet.

Q: Is my cable modem fast enough?
A: We were able to connect two boxes with no lag. As soon as the third box joined, it was overwhelming the uplink of the cable modem, and produced lag during the game.

They are also working on versions for BSD systems including Mac OS X, PPCLinux, and Windows. Currently it's only been tested on RedHat Linux 7.2.

I'd be very interested to know the up and down stream speeds of their cable and DSL connections, as their DSL was able to host 4 players with little lag.

Where I live cable has a 40kbps upstream, while DSL is only 15.
