  2. Stubbs Nominated For Horror Saturn

Thu, 02/16/2006 - 22:10 by narcogen

Gamasutra has a story covering the nominations for the 23rd Annual Saturn Awards given by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films. Stubbs the Zombie in Rebel Without a Pulse by Wideload Games was nominated in the Best Video Game Release: Horror category:

The 'Best Video Game Release: Horror' nominations for the 2006 awards include Monolith's F.E.A.R., Quantic Dream's Indigo Prophecy, Konami's Castlevania: Curse Of Darkness, Capcom's Resident Evil 4, and Wideload's Stubbs The Zombie.

It's likely that these awards simply don't have a category that's really appropriate for Stubbs: a game that employs horror elements to create humor, but isn't actually supposed to be scary. Still, it's great the game is getting some recognition.

Talk about a brutal pool

I am not going to go read, but at least two of those are considered to be the best games of the year, and one of them falls well on most peoples best of all times list.

Stubbs is looking a whole lot like Jamaica at the winter olympics.

...it's an honor just to be nominated. Looking over that list, it seems Stubbs is in good company.

That fifth slot on the Horror Game ballot could have been filled by one of the more overtly horror-themed games that came out last year, like The Suffering or Condemned or Cold Fear, but the Academy picked Stubbs. That says something to me. Something nice.

I think it is important to note that it was nominated over other games that perhaps fit the category better. It says to me that they strongly felt it was an award-worthy game, and so they put it in the best category they could, even if it wasn't the most appropriate for the game.

I suppose it will be very hard for Stubbs to win competing against games that are both good and more closely fit the idea of a traditional horror game, and perhaps it would draw criticism if it did win-- but it was a game worthy of note and I'm glad it is getting such notice.
