  2. A Clue on the Xbox's Price

Mon, 02/19/2001 - 00:25 by noctavis

First seen at MSXbox, Computer and Video Games has picked up some information on the Xbox's expected price from Microsoft UK.

Xbox will NOT cost $400

US games sites are buzzing with speculation that the Xbox will debut at a $400 price point when it hits America at the end of the year. UK representatives of the company have told us this definitely isn’t the case.

Microsoft reiterated today that no price point had been fixed for Xbox, but that $400 certainly wasn’t a figure it considered being competitive. The line from the Seattle giant continues to be that Xbox will look an attractive proposition at the time of its release. Dreamcast will be off the agenda by then, making PS2’s current RRP of $299 the best benchmark.

That said, it’s unlikely that PS2 will retain its current price point for the next six months. Sony themselves are keeping tight-lipped on this, but Xbox could find itself launching into a market very different from the present one, say with a PlayStation 2 at $199.

Heh, this is why competition is a Good Thing. The original $400 figure comes from this article (free login required) at the New York Times site. Narc and I currently have a bet riding on the amount that the Xbox is going to be selling for, he taking the high road and I shooting for a lower wallet-impact, so Sony may suddenly become some of my very bestest friends. ;^>
