  2. Aleph One Adds Chat, Server Browsing

Tue, 05/03/2005 - 01:28 by narcogen

Stosh over at Bungie.net passes on word that one of the latest nightly builds of Aleph One, the open source engine for playing Bungie's Marathon trilogy, has gained several new features more common among modern networked shooters: in this case, chat and server browser features.

In other Marathon-related news:

  • Alexander Smith, disillusioned with the Aleph One engine, moved his scenario, Infested, to the DIM3 engine.
  • Just a reminder that one of the longest-running Marathon scenarios, Eternal, was in fact released late last year. If you haven't yet, check out Eternal Mk V.

Nice but...

...where is this server browser for the latest build of Aleph One? I click on the Join Network Game button in the main menu and I get a blank list. And when I click Join there's a message saying something along the lines of "server is looking for games..." or whatever, but nothing happens. I did somehow manage to get my own name to pop up on the list of players in the join menu, but that's about it. Is it that nobody is on or am I not using the server browser correctly or do I have to download something separate? I'm really happy that they're making some progress in allowing Aleph One to go beyond LAN play, but it looks like either nobody cares anymore or there's still a lot that has to be fixed or organized.

I was attempting to get this to work earlier this evening. I was actually able to get a game going, but the other players crashed out. I do not believe I had everything configured properly, however. I was using some of the M1A1 files which may have messed things up. The problem with testing this out right now is that there is not enough interest. The server never seems to have anyone on it. It has to get to the point where Marathon is actually popular enough to have a few different games going online at once. Perhaps then people will be logging on and looking to find some games. Still, there is the issue with players not being able to join a game already in progress.

Testing

The feature IS being tested, so it probably won't work right for everybody just yet.

Also, you have to download a nightly build to get it-- it isn't in the latest stable releases.

Just a heads up, I just found out that there are troubles with the latest version regarding the server browser. So if it doesn't work for you either it's normal. Guess we just have to wait a little while longer, or use the Aleph One room in iChat/AIM.
