In the source of the html at the Mill, Frigidman admits that the item about the Mill shutdown being ordered by MS is, in fact, a joke. Since Myth is in fact now owned by Take Two, this would make little sense anyway.
From the source code:
The Mill has been shut off in protest due to recent news about Bungie and Microsoft. It goes against every fiber of my being to run a site that will promote and lengthen the life of a company that is now a part of the useless corporation known as Microsoft. I have my principles and I stand by them. Microsoft is a representation of all things bad in the software industry, and supporting them in any way turns my stomach. It was great running this site for the myth community and for Bungie. However, now that the Big Nasty is in charge of Bungie, I cannot bring myself to ever really take care of the site. So instead of just letting it sit and never get updated, I will just shut it down.
Frigid goes on to confirm that he won't let anyone else run the Mill, either, as it contains a financially significant amount of proprietary code and expensive hardware.
Well, it looks like another site may be shutting down in protest of Microsoft's purchase of Bungie. Ye Olde Filmz now has put up a simple page that shows a Microsoft logo along with the headline, Game over man, game over.
The rest reads only:
The apocalypse is here. Good bye.
No confirmation yet on whether this is just a temporary page or in fact a notice that Ye Olde Filmz has in fact shut down.
Our own esteemed Frigidman has shut down his popular Myth map and plugin site, the Mill, as a result of Bungie's purchase by Microsoft. From the site:
By order from Microsoft in light of the new acquisition of Bungie Software, the Mill has been ordered to be taken offline. It's been fun, but all good things must come to an end. I must say, I hate Microsoft with a deep-seated very nasty passion now, and they will never be able to redeem themselves.
There is no independent confirmation of whether Microsoft actually asked the Mill to be taken down or not. The Mill has also posted it's final download stats along with the announcement.
Whoops, we missed this crucial part in the frenzy (can you blame us?). A second article, entitled 5 Things You Must Know About Microsoft's Buying Bungie, was also posted at the same time, and in my opinion, it is the far more important read of the two. An excerpt, right from the top:
2. Bungie may continue to publish games for the Macintosh and PCSeropian and Jones will make decisions as to what platforms each Bungie game will be released for. So far, no decision has been made for Halo or Bungie's unannounced third title (being developed in Chicago). In fact, it is not even confirmed that Halo will be an Xbox title -- though if it's not we'll eat our hats.
If you only read one of the two articles, read this one. And watch for more information over the next 24 hours, as Bungie and Microsoft (presumably) make their own statements on the matter. And most importantly, don't panic... yet.
Kraken gets to go down in infamy as the reader who alerted us to the official news. In an interview with Jason Jones at the Daily Radar, it is confirmed: Bungie is being bought by Microsoft. Jones claims that Microsoft will still be allowing Bungie a certain degree of autonomy, including the choices of platforms to develop on.
From the article:
DR: What do you suggest Mac gamers do with all the hair they are going to pull out of their heads at this news?JJ: If they had some red and yellow dye handy, they could arrange it in the shape of a bulls-eye towards which we can aim the handy new Microsoft mind-control laser we got as part of the deal.
Is it just me, or were jokes like that a lot funnier before they became part of Microsoft?
Just kidding. I think.
At any rate, it appears Oni is not affected by this deal at all, but Jones was particularly silent on what platforms Halo would eventually be released for, making no mention of the Macintosh or the PC other than to say it will be Bungie's decision, and focusing on the bright future of the upcoming X-Box console from Microsoft.
Rampancy.net is the first to report some curious happenings at halobungie.com. They- well, you'll understand better if you look for yourselves! (And afterward, make sure you view, but don't get lost in, the forum post below... ;-)
Kudos to Haloplayers, who report that Halo has made the cover of the July 2000 issue of PCGamer UK, and that another preview of the game is contained within. The details are in the issue summary, along with a small version of the cover, showing the new marine in action.
And of course, a tastefully mounted slice of my eternal soul to the first fellow to send in a transcribed version of this article (or, just as good, the highlights from it) when it hits the shelves on July 6th. £7.99 per issue is a bit much for this hombre, though I'm sorely tempted with PCGUK's recent Halo coverage.
Update: Jenkz pointed out that this is actually the issue that came out on June 7th (damned numeric dating), and that the material within has already made it's rounds. So no soul for you! Grumble...
Sorry about the forum problems over the last hour... the frankenscript finally broke, and it took a whirlwind course in sloppy code to get it working again. Feeling rather pumped right now, but at least the forum is working again.
The observant among you will notice the new design... I think it looks cooler, is more functional, and should load much faster than the old one (only two levels of nested tables instead of five). Hope you like it too (if not, tell me why, and report blatant bugs too). There's going to be some broken links around here over the weekend, but it should be in good shape by Sunday.
Our thanks for your patience!
Courtesy of Phish, Rampancy.net has learned that Bungie's Halo has made the cover of another magazine-- this time the UK-based Macintosh magazine MacFormat. Here's an excerpt from their coverage:
The game that generated the most excitement at last month's E3 show in Los Angeles was undoubtedly Halo, Bunige Software's eagerly anticipated sci-fi combat spectacular. The good news is that, despite many rumors to the contrary, Halo is definitely real and definitely coming to the Mac - a simultaneous Mac/PC release is expected early next year.
