As Noctavis points out in the forum, Blue's News reports that id is releasing the source code for the original Quake, the engine upon which HalfLife is loosely based. Given rampant speculation that #2 is the Marathon source code, it seems 'tis indeed the season for giving. So many engines to choose from...
Kudos to JucasUpSet, who pointed out an interesting article at Stomped asking some prominent members of the gaming industry which games they're looking forward to in 2000. Sure enough, Halo appears on a few of those wishlists, though perhaps not as many as we devout might have expected. Give them time... they too shall see the light.
Well, it's not Halo, but danged if I'll stand idly by and watch this travesty continue. Chris t' Crappy points out a poll in dire need of a good ol' Bungie community smashing:
There is a poll up on www.gamespot.com asking which 1998 game we still play. Currently, Myth 2 is trailing and in second to last place and Starcraft is in first place. To our credit, we are beating out Falcon 4.0 ... and well, that's insulting.
I know for a fact I'll be playing Myth 2 well into the new millenium (yes yes, I'm aware that, technically, 2001 is the real beginning), and I'm sure I'm not alone. Mythers of the world, unite! Go forth and cast down the heathen games!
Kudos to CyberBob, who kindly sent in this news tidbit which I will now slavishly copy and paste to the news (such a hard job I have):
From halo.gamesweb.de I got that the german publisher of Halo sets its release to September 2000 for the German version.
We all know, of course, that Bungie never gives release dates for their games, but Take 2 probably has a better idea of things than we do. Interesting information, but take it with a grain of salt.
I wanted to say pfhive , but I figured that would just be pushing it. Hamish at Marathon's Story, arguably the center of the Marathon universe, reminds us all that Marathon was officially released on this date five years ago, box or no box. In celebration, he has pulled some great old items out of his formidable archives (7 gigs strong, of course), so swing by and enjoy the blast from the past.
Kudos to SonicStorm, who pointed out Halo's presence in GameSpy.com's Y2K Preview. No new information, of course, but yet more industry attention to this favored addiction of ours. If it's turning heads now, just wait until it's released.
A mini-poll run rampant... a bit slow in updating the poll this week, but I blame it on the holiday (and egg nog). Tis the season for giving, and while we're doing that, here's the results from last week's poll. Asked whether or not they had seen the recently published IncitePC movie, voters said:
| Not Yet: | 51% | |
| Yes - Magazine: | 14% | |
| Yes - Downloaded: | 29% | |
| Yes - Other: | 5% |
I was surprised to see that fully half of the voters have not yet seen this movie. Not so surprising was that half of those who had obtained it by downloading... one wonders if those who have not seen it have abstained from downloading, or have simply been unable to locate a download site.
Thanks to all who voted, and a new poll will be up as soon as I've finished with this grueling mental and physical torture so quaintly referred to as Christmas shopping ... grumble.
Certainly wasn't expecting this development... as reported by IMG, Oni Project Lead Brent Pease has left Bungie West. No details are available yet, but it does seem likely that Oni will be a little bit later as a result. More details as they arise...
Woefully neglected and getting out of date, the FAQ has now been updated with recent information on and from the two Halo movies. This made necessary the addition of a new, Miscellany section, under which I'll be able to file all sorts of things in the future...
As always, your own questions are welcome! We'll do our best to get them answered, and if they're thoughtful and common, we'll add them to the steadily expanding list itself.
