Freewill, a long-time Bungie fan who has been present at a number of Bungie-related events and booths, has prepared a good amount of video material from Mac World Expo, San Francisco. You can download it at Halo.BOrg, currently.
Those of you who have been participating in our forum within the last week are probably aware of the recent bit of comparison between Tribes, Tribes 2 and Halo. The website Evil Avatar recently cornered Tim Gift of Dynamix and performed a short interview with him about the similarities and differences between Tribes 2 and Halo. If the article scrolls off the news page, you can probably still catch the same interview material in their forum. Kudos to CaptShazbot for informing us of this.Remember you're representing the Halo community, so go with an open mind, patience and maybe a grain of salt. Tribes 2 does look interesting and it will be a bi-platform release, last I checked, but we'll just have to see whether it can live up to Gift's statements. I'll likely purchase Tribes 2 to get me through the period until Halo is released, and have been a Tribes gamer for a year or so now. However, I'm still keeping my bet firmly on Bungie and Halo.
SlashDot.Org, one of the primary news sites for geeks on the Internet, posted a news item on the Marathon 2 source-code GPL release. Kudos to Bravehamster for making them aware of this.
As posted by Marathon's Story, the article has received a goodly number of responses - Marathon is well remembered. Of significant note is that Jason Pellerin (Bungie's SysAdmin) posted a reply:
What we need now is a Linux port(Score:5, Informative)

As Bungie's SysAdmin and resident Linux enthusiast, what I'd really like to see is a Linux port. I want to play Marathon again, dammit!
My C skills are not the best, but I can contribute space for a cvs server, time to manage it, and time to manage patch submissions, builds and testing. And a mailing list and bugzilla db, if those are needed.
If you want to get in on the fun, please email me at m2linux@bungie.com.
He later updated with the following information:
I've set up an anonymous cvs server here:
:pserver:anonymous@beetle.bungie.com:/home/m2linux/cvsroot
login: anonymous
password: pfhor
module: m2linux
...for your source-tree grabbing needs. To submit patches, talk about plans and ideas, etc, please write me at m2linux@bungie.com.
All of you penguin-heads get crackin'! The more software developed for Linux, the more attractive Linux will be to both developers and to other users out there.
For those of you who weren't actually caught in the middle of the changes, the forum recieved a bit of a facelift today, to help improve organization and readability. It's there for you guys, so take a peek and see if you like the new look. Comments and suggestions are welcomed, especially since I'll be working on the script for a few days to come.
Or some of it, at least. Bungie's Joseph Staten posts word that the salvaged portions of Bungie's first day of bTV broadcasts have been posted at their bTV Archive. Alright you LPB's, time to grab it and tell us what's in there. ;)
In response to gamers' questions about the Marathon 2 (for PC) source code, VirtualWolf reports that this little tidbit was in the Marathon 2 (for Mac) ReadMe file:
This is the Mac source. The sole known archive of the Windows 9x source was placed in a lead box and shipped to one of our island laboratories for safekeeping.Unbeknownst to us, the boat carrying the box made an unscheduled run up the coast of Madagascar, where the ship's captain hoped to catch the end of the annual Miss Middle Of Nowhere pageant. The ship was approximately six miles from shore when it was torpedoed by a one-man sub purchased from the Hammacher-Schlemmer catalog by a punter with more money than brains. Divers are still combing the sea floor looking for the box containing the Windows code, and if we ever find it I'm sure we'll let you know. Windows hackers with lots of spare time may still be able to do interesting things with this code.
It's good to know that Bungie is making a conscious effort to find the code for interested PC gamers, and I'm still happy for you Mac users out there. Enjoy your new toy! ;-)
After two weeks and a little harrassment, I've opened a new poll for your button clicking pleasure. The question du jour is with regards to Bungie's release of the Marathon 2 source code yesterday, the long awaited #2. Are you at all interested in this offering, or is it something of little value to you?
Cast those votes, folks. And if source code and debugging is up your alley, check out that source code.
Kudos to Jeff Myers, who has set up a developer's mailing list for you adventurous souls out there who downloaded the Marathon 2 source code. From the post:
I have set up a developer mailing list for the marathon code You can subscribe by sending mail to listserv@3dgamedev.com with subscribe marathon_codingOf course please replace with your actual name.
Soon I will also be seting up a web archive of the list discusions and webspace for projects/hostings if needed.
You'd almost think some people have been planning for this day. It may be a bit off topic, but any and all source code discussion is welcome on the forum (if traffic demands it, I'll happily set up a dedicated forum for it, too). If I get a few free days, I might just check out the code myself...
Kudos to MAgh Tuireadh, who posted word that he has mirrored the Marathon 2 source code for those of you having trouble getting onto Bungie's server:
Quick thinking on his part, as this should save a lot of people a lot of headaches.
