Do we have some great sleuths in our community or what? A number of Bungiefen have been hoping, fervently, that the much anticipated #2 would be the Marathon source code. Well, jooz guyz just got your wish! Red Hot Ryan was the first person to pass us the news, so he deserves a fat kudos from the rest of us. Here's a PR, ripped straight from Mac Gamer's Ledge:
Today at 7 pm CST Bungie Software releases the Mac source code for their classic game Marathon 2: Durandal to the net. This game represented the pinnacle of first-person shooter technology in 1995, and was the most successful of the highly-acclaimed Marathon series. Programmers only need apply: the code is in MPW format (Macintosh Programmers Workshop, which can be freely downloaded at developer.apple.com), and because various components had to be removed before public release, devising some workarounds will be necessary before the code will compile. Nevertheless, for those with the skills to manipulate it, the code can form the basis of all kinds of 3D, first-person perspective games, and we look forward to seeing what is done with it. The code is being released under the terms of the GNU public license, and Bungie does not offer technical support with the code. More information can be found in the ReadMe that accompanies it. The download can be found at ftp://ftp.bungie.com/pub/mac/misc/Marathon2Source.sit and a gzipped version at ftp://ftp.bungie.com/pub/mac/misc/marathon2_src.tar.gz.
Now, what's it gonna take to get them to release the source code for Marathon 2 (PC)...
As promised, Battleground: Halo has opened its doors to the public, with no shortage of content and a smooth design (just what is it about grey blues, anyways? ;).
A site worth keeping an eye on, especially over the next few days as they get up to speed. Welcome to the rat race, guys.
Well, I downloaded the footage myself... Deus had cut out the Oni material in order to reduce it to a relatively managable 74 megabytes. The movie includes a little bit of game playing, but is 90% or more material from the Gathering of Fans at Club-I last week.Unfortunately, the audio isn't the greatest as a result of the ambient noise that was there during the fanfest. If anyone has the proper tools to help sharpen what is being said (and to help reduce the noise) I'd like to hear from you. What is somewhat intelligible is a quick description of the Halo plot, which I've transcribed and posted up in the forum for now. If you were paying attention to fans' reports in the Core and Halo.Bungie.Org forums then it may not have any new information for you.
Some folk who were around to see Bungie's first Halo page might recall some of the cryptic, random messages that appeared there. While they recieved a great deal of attention back then, they have been largely forgotten since.
However, Cannibal Harry has exhumed those messages, and posted a long, Crack Pipe Alert analysis of them that is one of the best yet. Using what might be time-stamps in the messages, he has built an interesting and plausible timeline, including what could be the origin of Cortana... definitely worth checking out:
Sick of bTV news yet? Panamon has posted word that he has extracted the Halo footage from the bTV day 4 movie, and posted it on CPHL. Quality is still no better than the 300 meg full movie, but the size is certainly a bit more managable.
And once you have it, the forum is doing brisk business dissecting it, from falling damage to the road-cone alien... get your thoughts in while the getting's good.
Two of the Pax Nimbus, SiliconDream and DeusExMachina, made it to MWSF and to the Gathering of Fans on Wednesday the 5th. Despite great hardship - including Silly's damaged camcorder, problems converting the video to QT format and pizza-bloat - they managed to film a number of things, convert it to QuickTime format and hand it off to me so that I could share it with the rest of you. The movie is pretty large, (about 74 megabytes in ZIP format) so if you'd like to mirror it I would probably like to hear from you. This is the raw footage, hot off DeusExMachina's hard drive, so it may not be quite as polished as some movies. I haven't even had a chance to view it myself, since it's still downloading to my own computer, so let's hope they didn't mix this up with the vid from last week's steamy frat party! ;-)Some of the things which they report are in the movie include: a goodly amount of Oni footage, the speech by Joe Staten and some socializing by some of Bungie's fans (of course). There may be some parts where certain voices are more difficult to hear, for various reasons, so we'll have to see how it goes. Regardless, I hope you get some enjoyment out of it!And now, with a double kudos to Silly and Deus, here's the movie!
