How Stuff Works has interviewed Pete Parsons from Bungie about storytelling in computer games. He talks about how Bungie fleshed out the Halo universe. Thanks Rams at Halo Planet.
According to synide at MLG, they are offering a new feature called MLG-TV; a selection of video-on-demand streams showing various tourney wrapup videos. Thanks Fusion at Sector 7.
The I Love Bees Alternative Reality Game, scheduled to end on Halo 2's release day, may be getting closer to finishing up. Louis Wu at HBO writes that the 404 page at ILB.com is now instructing players to gather in certain cities on November 4 for a "training exercise", which some fans speculate may involve... playing Halo 2. More information, as always, is available on the Netninja BeeWiki.
The Junkyard has turned its spotlight on Andrew Zulpo from Xbox Ottawa, the group that produces the Fire Team Charlie (FTC) webseries. Go check it out!
Slashdot recently interviewed author Neal Stephenson, and his response to a question about the merging of novels with games turned up information on ILB:
It has already happened in the form of the I Love Bees alternate reality game, which, as many of you must know, is a promotional campaign for Halo 2. I know the people who did it, but I have lost track of what I promised not to reveal publicly, and so will shut up for now.
Also, for those old school Bungie fans who have been around since they were a Mac developer and publisher, it seems that while Bungie has been moving away from Apple, Stephenson has been moving towards OS X:
You guessed right: I embraced OS X as soon as it was available and have never looked back. So a lot of "In the beginning was the command line" is now obsolete. I keep meaning to update it, but if I'm honest with myself, I have to say this is unlikely.
Lots more worth reading in there, so check out the full article. Thanks to Louis Wu for the heads-up.
The next part of Bungie's Guides by Frankie is up at Bungie.net. This one covers Dual Wielding. There's a list of weapons that can be dual wielded, including the plasma pistol and rifle, the human pistol and SMG, the needler, and an as-yet-unrevealed Covenant weapon. You can wield any combination of two of these weapons in either hand. The article goes into quite a bit of detail, describing the pros and cons of various weapon combinations; Frankie notest that twin SMGs are especially effective against Drones, as the kickback on the weapon actually helps track targets flying overhead.
[image:8374 left hspace=5 vspace=5 border=0]Two Halo 2-related additions to the site today. The first is the Halo2.com Decoded gallery; akba and dogchow produced translated texts for each of the images on the Halo2.com flash site, and superimposed the English text on the images to make it readable by all. Our gallery is arranged in a hierarchy similar to that used on the site, so viewers can get an idea of the information contained therein without having to load the Flash file or use one of the many translation programs.
The second addition is related; again, with thanks to akba and dogchow, images of the various units, weapons and vehicles that were featured on Halo2.com were made into cutouts and combined with explanatory texts to form the beginnings of our Halo 2 Guide, which will later be expanded to cover maps, tactics, and other pieces of information as they become available post-release.
The new Halo 2 commercial that was leaked awhile back has now been broadcast in North America, and several versions of it have hit the Internet. Mythica is hosting an MPEG, BSP is mirroring it, a QuickTime, and a DivX. Thanks Count Zero and Louis Wu at HBO.
UPDATE: There's a new version available on several sites now, recorded from satellite feed by ZiplocBodybag and mpeg2 encoded by CYBRFRK and sized for the web by Blackstar. It's being hosted at Boomerica, HaloArt, and Blackstar Productions. The earlier version mirrored at BSP and mentioned above has been replaced by this version.
Halo World has an item on a program called Halo Map Manager, which allows you to activate and deactivate maps in your Halo Custom Edition folders. This is a big advantage, since the number of maps in that folder affects CE's load times. Thanks demented puppy dot com.
