A post by Andrew Meggs on the Futuremyth forum shed new light on techniques being used to reduce Myth III data file sizes:
1) built-in jpeg compression on all map art files2) 3D units have a single texture image instead of numerous sprite pictures showing each frame of animation in each angle, and again with the JPEG compression
3) skeletal animation means only key frames for bones need be stored, rather than storing a snapshot of each vertex position at each frame
Good news for those concerned about the feasibility of distributing 3rd-party creations online.
Marty O'Donnell, Bungie's number-one audiophile, stopped by HBO to give them an update on Halo and other titles. Here are a couple of quick cuts:
- The Mighty Chris Butcher was asked to stop playing CounterStrike and actually start working on Halo. His reply maybe next week...
- The AI controlling the Pillar of Autumn was working so well that it actually picked up Bill Gates (for what he thought was just a tour of Redmond) and made a jump to the other side of the galaxy. Now we have to build a new one that isn't as smart.
Hrm, sounds like there's a minor revolt occuring in the New Zealander portion of Redmond. We wish Rob and Lorraine all of the best on their wedding together! (Be sure to get back to work right away guys!)
As noted by Myth Wolf Age, Mumbo Jumbo has launched its official site. It's somewhat minimal at the moment, but contains some information on the company, as well as a big ol' pile of job offers.
The site doesn't currently contain any information about Myth III, other than links to Myth Wolf Age and GOD's Myth III page; in fact, Myth III team head Andrew Meggs said on our forum that
I only know the site is up from reading about it here. If anyone hears anything juicy about that upcoming unannounced title the page is referring to, be sure and drop me an email to let me know.
Thanks to ESiva for pointing out one of Matt's posts at HBO:
Most of us here at Bungie will be heading back to Chicago over the next 48 hours to attend the Lorraine Reyes/Robt. McLees wedding and post-ceremony hoedown. I will be among them.Consequently there will be no Halo update this week. Sorry about that. Things will be back on schedule next Friday.
Celebration of matrimonial bliss, more important than a Halo update? Some people have the strangest priorities...but congratulations anyway to the happy couple. May you spend many years crafting pictures of violence and mayhem together.
I found this feature on MacGamer.com and thought you Reloaders would get a kick out of it. ;-)
It's an article that desribes the 10 types of gamers and how they're likely to do in an online game. I've been playing some of the Unreal Tournament realism MODs lately and can tell you that there are many Smack-Talkin' Punks who try to solve self-esteem issues by smack talking, i.e. sharing comments about an opponent's sexual orientation, reproductive ability or mother in a style which is part Jerry Springer audience member, part George Jefferson and part Glenn Close from the movie Fatal Attraction . Enjoy!
If you can take some killer Oni screenshots, then it's time to let them shine in Oni Shot's contest. Your screenshot(s) are restricted to 500 K each and you may only submit three entries maximum. If you've got what it takes to win it all, then head over to the contest page and submit your entry.
Fans of the Charlie's Point conversion, which placed Mythers in control of Vietnam-like combat, will be pleased to see that a sequel has been released by wod`asini and ColdSteel. Here's what's up:

The bungie.net server for Myth: TFL has acted awful cruddy as of late and has even been offline since yesterday. If you're one of those TFL die-hards, you may be worrying about it being discontinued, but the bungie.net website has updated with news that should give you something to cheer for:
Some of you may have noticed that there have been a number of, well, problems with the TFL server's stability recently. It seems that after nearly four years of valliant service the TFL gaming server has opted for retirement and a cheap gold watch instead of the standard blaze of glory route that we prefer not only our employes but our hardware and peripherals to take when that time comes...What this means for the rest of you is that TFL will be down for a little bit. However, we plan to replace the current server with one that's just as, if not more stable in the next week or so! Hopefully, you won't have to wait long to resume your regular carnage garring activities.
Mmm... server upgrade.
Just back from the wilderness, and what do I find in my mailbox? That's right! An opportunity to buy 25 million email addresses for only $99! How could anyone resist? Oh yes, and Bungie's Matt Soell has graciously sent us this week's Halo update:
The Halo Update rolls on for another lucky week.
- Apart from mapping and shaders, most of the Pillar of Autumn's interior is finished Ц everything but airlocks and doors.
- We got the escape pod to fly this week, though it'll probably only be used in cinematics. John calls it the Bumblebee and that's an apt name, given its bulbous nature.
- Screen flashes (when the grenades explode) work now.
- The amount of dialog the various characters have at their disposal grows daily.
- Chucky continues pounding away at the pathfinding code.
- Mat fixed 90% of the bugs in the editor's cinematic-recording mode, plus all the bugs in the code written by Jason and Matt. Where would we be without him?
- The Mighty Chris Butcher retains his AI SackMaster crown for another week. There's a race you haven't seen yet who carry a rechargeable shield, and what they'll do when they see you is deploy in packs with their shields activated, and as you deplete their shields they'll retreat behind something and wait for them to recharge again. The net effect is a force of enemies who are tough to dispatch because the weak ones are constantly dropping back to recharge, then running back to relieve their weakened fellows.
- Multiplayer is getting better; post-game scoring is in this week, and various tweaks and adjustments make it more fun to play. One of our many rough multiplayer maps is currently titled УBeaver CreekФ Ц not that you should read too much into that.
- Teleporters work, though they're not placed on any maps yet.
- You can actually grenade hop in Halo, though I don't think you'll ever need to and I doubt you'll ever want to.
- We have dropships docked in a much larger Covenant ship now. Very impressive.
- And speaking of big ships, the full-scale Pillar of Autumn exterior model is a full freakin' kilometer long.
Beaver Creek? Scandalous!
