Many people have said that Myth plays similarly to chess and that the engine would faithfully allow such a conversion. The Idiot Collective have posted two images of their chess conversion to the Myth II engine. Here are some of the features you can expect:
Pawnsswapping!
Scripted Turntaking! (On Legendary)
Tons of new sounds & units!
Retextured Models!
Easter Eggs!& much much more... :-)
The first post shows the map with normal Myth units, but the second post shows new chess units. When can you expect MythCHESS? Soon... (mb)
The Russian gaming site Freelancer has a new Myth III preview up, and in surprisingly good English. Check it out.
So we're told by Psyjnir himself. Not a lot there as yet, but it does have its very own Letters to the Webmaster section. (That's the Psyjnir Complex Webmaster, not the almighty jetpack-wearing PARLEZ-VOUS! -screaming Bungie Webmaster). And with that, what site can go wrong?
If you visit Creation Games, you'll find this update about The Seventh God:
10 levels colormapped, built & scripted or scripting.
4+ Multiplayer maps built.
18+ Units existing in TagSet.The above amount of work was done in under 6 months & we are very proud of everything that exists.
However...
8 levels remain that cannot be built do to lack of being able to get new Models into the Myth Engine. These levels evolve around Castles & such that cannot be duplicated with current existing Models. We are sorry for the delay, but we have based this project on the ability to bring new models into the Myth engine. It still remains impossible to do that with the programs that are available to us. At this point we cannot finish TSG until that ability becomes available to the general mapmaking community.
Maybe we can get some other non-TSG things to you fans while we wait for Apathy as it was promised.
Apathy is a model editing program that is supposed to be released along with Jinn from Vista. So The Seventh God's rate of progress will probably slow until Jinn's out. Keep an eye out at TheSeventhGod.Com. And SiliconDream will inform you if anything amazing happens. :-)
And without further ado...
February 16, 2001This morning the Seattle region saw its first substantial snowfall in several years. Up to ten inches in some areas, if you believe the Seattle Times. The collective response to a little snow in this land of gas-guzzling four-wheel-drive SUVs fitted with ski racks was to scream like little girls and hide in the basement. The schools are closed, the parking lots half-empty, and the Microsoft hallways almost bereft of life. But did a few paltry inches of snow prevent Bungie from showing up to do the requisite day's worth of ass-kicking? Hell no. Thus, in the Bungie spirit of standing tall and strong while our so-called peers wuss out with muttered excuses, I begin this week's Halo update.
- Shadows work now, though they're not finished. The shadow of a tree (yes, The Coolest Tree Ever In A Videogame) swaying in the wind, for example, isn't quite right. Should be fixed soon.
- The transparent water shader is in, and while that isn't finished either it looks beautiful already. One of the planned improvements is depth fogging.
- Collision models have permutations now. This means that character models with permutations - a different head shape or longer arms, for example - will react appropriately when shot.
- The Jeep kicks up dirt again. It'll kick up other sorts of debris as appropriate, though that code isn't in yet.
- Those of you who've expressed a concern will be happy to hear that we're testing lens flares.
- Controller support is 90% there.
- We've started working on the HUD. After much debate the team came up with a design that everyone likes.
- Matt got contrails working again.
- Holograms mostly work ≠ there's still some debugging to be done. Shiek showed me a hologram of a structure floating in midair, which cast soft, glowing lines on the ground and walls of the room as it spun. Sweet.
- The chain gun for the Jeep is now fully textured. Rob is working on a new gun intended for fodder-type opponents; the geometry is almost done and texturing should be another couple of days.
- The script for Halo's single-player campaign is about 30% done. (Don't confuse this with the story itself, which is more-or-less finished at this point, and should completely satisfy those of you who like Bungie games for the story.)
- Chucky got the super-hi-res screenshot code working. I can't imagine what we'll use it for. ;-)
Free crack at the bar! Discuss!
Max, aka Yeroen, reports that we may be seeing some items from Matt's Halo merchandise thread on a possible new Bungie.Net poll:
Our little QuickPoll doesn't quite cover the gamut of potential Halo merchandise, so Matt has started a heated discussion over at Rampancy about other merchandise ideas. I'll tell you what: if we can make heads and tails out of that craziness and manage to pull out a few more popular items we'll add them to a follow up poll. Keep an eye out for it.
Heh, the list is probably one of the largest threads we've had in some time... the rate of submissions appears to be slowing down a bit, however. If you have a new idea (and many are duplicated within the thread) then get it in ASAP.
MacGamer quickly spotted an update at Apple's Game Site. Apple launched the site to show its dedication to games on the Mac some while ago. Brad Cook has just authored a feature on Oni that is available at the site. It discusses the base of Oni's plot, examines its influences, and includes a few quotes from developers of the game, including lead designer Hardy LeBel. There is lots of cool information there, so don't miss it.
The Corporation is a gaming site that began with some fairly well-known Mythers sometime last year. The Corporation covers more than simply Bungie games though, as you can read all sorts of gaming goodness while you're visiting.
Part of being a gaming site requires you to review games, so Mr. Galt has reviewed Oni. He definitely enjoyed it:
Often times, I would take a moment to look around, and would usually be amazed. Trashed computers not only flame, but also fizzle and spark. People you are fighting will dive for a gun on the ground, roll, pick up the gun and come up shooting. The aesthetics lead to a truly immersive quality, that sucks the player right in. I know thatТs what I look for in a game: that giant sucking sound as you leave the real world behind and are immersed in this virtual reality.
Oni was graded 4.5 out of 5 overall. The only iffy area was the sound. Mr. Galt said that itТs suitable, but nothing to write home about.
Thanks, Sol.
Picked this tidbit up at Ars Technica, who report that Nvidia's XGPU and MCPX chips, the dual hearts of the XBox, are out of the lab and into fabrication. With some luck, this may mean that the demonstrations at Gamestock will be running on actual XBox hardware, or a development version thereof. And if not Gamestock, E3 looms larger every day...
